Almost = two weeks away

Also, as a Help Desk guy I found this pretty amusing, if you can get past the Alving and the Chipmunk voices they decided to use for reasons I cannot imagine.

Had a lengthy sonogram and consultation with a high risk specialist today. Short version: everything looks great. Both girls (this is official now) are still measuring good, have all their parts where they should be, and show no signs of any abnormalities or other bad things. Jenn likewise is showing no (unexpected) problems or symptoms. We are going to be at Week 24 tomorrow and, according to this doctor, should probably be looking forward to a Week 36 delivery sometime in late September.

Now the bad news: We haven't done shit to get ready for this yet.

OK, so that's a lie. This past weekend we went up to KC and dropped probably close to $250 on baby clothes. Which sounds like a lot, but you'd be surprised how much that gets you when they're on sale for $5-9 a pop. At least it was a lot compared to what I spent for Minnie Mouse and Thing 1/Thing 2 jumpers I bought in the Orlando airport. Lots of matching pink and purple outfits, and even some Jayhawk and Royals gear as well. Hulver you better upgrade the disk capacity on these servers because you better believe I'll be uploading a lot of pictures of the girls in Jayhawk gear.

And truth be told, Jenn thinks she has found the cribs she wants to order, and we pretty much know what car seats we want as well. We have also registered at Babies R Us and Target for quite a bit of other stuff we'll be needing (but not everything yet).

But still, a lot to do. Haven't even touched the spare bedroom/babies room. Hopefully something to get started on this weekend. Sounds like we're just going to paint it, maybe stripes of some kind but probably just a top/bottom two tone thing with maybe some border paper in the middle. No big deal, but still something that takes time with a hard deadline. Perhaps if I actualize my priorities to take advantage of the long hanging fruit, or something like that.

And then there's the car issue. My car, an 8 year old Maxima with 120k+, has rather expensive air conditioning issues and brake rotors that can't seem to stay fixed properly. Jenn's car, a 5 year old Alero, has had several minor issues lately and a pretty small backseat, too small for rear facing car seats it appears. So it's new car time. Eventually we will likely get a minivan, but more immediately I have been looking seriously at small to mid-sized SUV's; think Honda CR-V/Saturn Vue on the smaller side, and Toyota Highlander/Honda Pilot on the larger side. The problem, of course, is whether it will fit two rear facing car seats, and still allow two people to sit in the front seats without eating the dash. So far just internet research, but we need to get this done sooner than later, as already Jenn is starting to really feel the effects if she has to walk/be on her feet for extended periods of time. We'll probably go buy the car seats tomorrow or this weekend, to take one along on test drives. If I can find a smaller model that will work for this comfortable I'll definitely go for that, taking into account the mileage/price issues, but from some of the things I've read, I might have to look at getting the larger model. We'll see.

And remember: You can't arrange by penis.

carseats by joh3n (2.00 / 0) #1 Wed Jul 02, 2008 at 07:16:52 PM EST
I highly recommend the Britax line.  Expensive, but when you think about  the amount of time the little ones are in them, it evens out.

Kids are expensive by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #2 Wed Jul 02, 2008 at 08:01:54 PM EST
before we had them, we made less than half what we make now, yet had a lot less debt. If you're lucky, you'll find a relative, friend of co-worker who has girls a year older than yours, so you can get handmedowns.

I've got...let's see, 5 cousins on my mom's side that have had girls, 4 of them within the past 2 years or so, and a buddy who has two little girls that are about 3 and 1. Plus I have another friend with a boy, my sister has one two year old boy and another on the way...yeah I'm expecting at least a few hand me downs. But hey, Jenn had a blast buying cute little outfits, it was money well spent.

my sis-in-law has one and it's pretty spiffy.  mileage is so-so, but everything in that class is.  check it out.  great service record (in her case...and they aren't so good with the car thing) and we know it'll hold two rear facing, a large dog, a pile of stuff and two adults in comfort.  and it is a pretty good ride.

just a thought.  good luck!  we're in your corner!

They get two rear facing in that? by jayhawk88 (2.00 / 0) #5 Wed Jul 02, 2008 at 11:36:59 PM EST
Man maybe I'm seriously underestimating what some of the smaller SUV's can handle.

they had the rear facing in one of the seats and enough crap in the other to simulate another one.  take a closer look.  i think our ability to judge space has been ruined by the monster SUVs.

oh...a piece of unsolicited advice (which i swore i'd never give)?  buy the car seat(s) and take 'em with you.  because the answer to the question "can i get a car seat that better fits my car when rear facing?" is no.
